This Year’s Convention Offers Something for Everyone

The end is near!!!  Not for the world, but for our school year.  Just spring festivals and trips, spring concerts, recruiting, auditions, and graduation….  OK, we still have plenty to do, but it is not too early to think about the summer.  Registration for membership, convention and housing for our 2014 TODA convention is already underway.  It is not too early to go online at www.todaweb.org and register for the convention July 27-30th.  Pre-registration saves you $20 and pre-registrants have no long lines! We have many clinics this year that will be of interest to everyone, including several clinicians joining us from out of state.  Barry Green, an orchestral and solo double bass player and teacher, will be presenting a clinic on The Inner Game of Music (thanks to GIA Publications) and he will be performing “Anna’s Way,” a musical and visual journey that explores the joy of music.  Brian Balmages, Director of Instrumental Publications for the FJH Music Company Inc., will lead a reading session of new FJH music and will present several other workshops.

The convention will include many sessions presented by our TODA membership.  In addition to the usual dynamic sessions, Matthew Porter will lead a reading session that has been recently added to the PML (a big thanks to Pepper Music for supplying the music for this session).  A group of Baylor String Faculty will be with us, presenting clinics on Violin, Viola, and Bass Techniques and Conducting and Using Improvisation in the String ClassroomAnna Macias will present a clinic on Fiddle Techniques and Chris Hanson will lead a session on Implementing Popular Music.  There will be clinics on teaching all of the string instruments, including teaching the one that is not your major performance instrument.  This year’s offerings will provide all of us with many opportunities to continue to grow and build on the strongest string programs in the nation.   Last but not least, this year’s convention includes a first-ever Mozart’s Requiem Sing-In, with the audience becoming the choir. All members from TODA, TCDA, and TBA are invited to participate in this concert. TODA and TBA will provide a small orchestra to accompany the chorus. Don’t miss this event!

Package all of this with the Fiesta Welcome, the BBQ, the Exhibit Hall, and the opportunity to visit with friends from across the state, and this convention becomes the best deal around.  I look forward to seeing everyone in July. Register Now!

TODA Members can sponsor high school students for High School Student Leadership Day at only $15 per student. This year’s event features Jeremy Spicer, CEO, Solutions & Specialized Innovations; Connie Sanchez, Youth Director and High on Life Sponsor; and Charlotte Moellering, Adjunct Instructor at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Registration is done through convention registration. Deadline: June 13. For more information, click here.

Back by popular demand, our New Teacher Academy offers new teachers valuable skills in classroom management, student motivation, communicating with your principal, and more. Pre-registration preferred. Go here for more information.

Please go to www.todaweb.org, click on the ‘Orchestra Director of the Year’ button on the left and follow the link at the bottom of the page.  We, the board, hold your nominations for consideration for three years so if they are not selected this year, they could be selected the next two years!

Nominations will be sent directly to the TODA office which is listed on the Nomination Form.

Convention July 27 - 30, 2014

With rising convention costs, we rely heavily on the support of our music vendors and exhibitors.

Their continued efforts support our organization in many ways, allowing us to continue with our convention and social activities.

Please speak with your local music vendor and encourage them to attend the convention or advertise in the program. This summer while you are walking the exhibit hall, please take a moment to speak with the exhibitors, introduce yourself and support them by buying their products.
