Great Things in Store for Convention 2016!
by Sandra Vandertulip, President

Attention TODA Members!  Convention 2016 is fast approaching. This is our 55th year, and we are making sure the schedule is jam-packed, awesome inspiring, and a get-your-teaching-groove-on kind of time!  First of all, make sure you log on to www.todaweb.org and pay your 2016 Membership Dues and Convention Fee Now (a $20 convention discount is available for early registration by July 1st). Next, make sure you have made Housing Reservations for San Antonio because rooms are going FAST (the Grand Hyatt is already sold out). So get on the website and process your hotel reservation before it's too late!

Let me preview our headliners with you: This summer, the world renowned artist and educator, Mark Wood, will be headlining our convention with his wizardry of electronic music and improvisation for stringed instruments.  His clinics will feature Mark Wood Compositions, Alternative Styles with his colleague Haydn Vitara, as well as an Electric Instrument Clinic!  He will also present his new technique book co-written with Robert Gillespie, the internationally known string educator from Ohio State University. Mr. Wood's sessions will be new and exciting! Robert Gillespie will present additional session topics entitled Helping your Orchestra Go from Rote to Note and Life Beyond D Major!  The master teacher will offer all of us great ways to improve our ensembles.

Lastly, for all you Richard Meyer fans, Mr. Meyer will be presenting sessions on The First Ten Minutes of Rehearsal, Non Performance Lesson Plans as well as Programming Outside the Bachs.  These sessions will be full of fun and are guaranteed to give all of us great tips for teaching our orchestra students.

I can't wait to share all of these wonderful people with the entire TODA membership!  Make your plans now for our July 21-24 convention. This is one you don't want to miss!

Fabulous Clinicians at Convention
by Sixto Elizondo, IV, Member At Large

The Convention is right around the corner, and we hope you will make plans to attend! The summer is a time to relax and reflect in preparation for the coming year, and the convention is always a sign it is time to get back to work! Our 2016 Convention is packed with clinicians who are sure to inspire and invigorate your teaching.

Our organization is a diverse and talented group of teachers, and we are proud to have several clinics presented by our members:

Carolyn Vandiver will present a clinic on recruiting and retaining students titled "Seek'em and Keep'em."

Dr. Jan Garverick will pay homage to one of our recently departed members, the prolific Carold Nunez in a session titled "Music of Carold Nunez."

Ann Smith will host a reading session titled "New to UIL PML" introducing recently added music that you may want to consider adding to your UIL library.

Christopher Reidlinger will present an in-depth look and high school level technique titled "Continued Technical Development of the High School String Player."

These master teachers, in addition to our "headliners," possess a wealth of knowledge in our field that will benefit teachers at all stages of their career. Recent graduates and teachers from outside of our state may not know that this amazing resource is available to them. Please consider asking a new teacher in your region to consider traveling to San Antonio this summer. The networking and learning possibilities at the TODA convention are endless and should not be missed!
