Happy New Year! TODA Happy Hour!
by Sandra Vandertulip, President

I am wishing everyone a wonderful start to the beginning of your second semester! Hopefully you have all rested over the holiday break, enjoyed your families and celebrated the coming of the New Year! As we move forward into the stressful season of contests, competitions, trips and final concerts, please remember to reach out to one another for strength and advice as many of us are our own island in the music sea!

Speaking of reaching out, lets all reach out to one another at the TMEA Convention at the TODA Happy Hour! TODA is breaking out and having happy hour at On The Rocks Pub on Thursday, February 11, 2016 from 7 to 9 p.m.  On The Rocks Pub is a contemporary bar with a relaxed feel with plenty of seating.  Wear your badge and Dos XX Draft will be $3 and well drinks will be $4!!!  How great is that?  On The Rocks Pub is located at 270 Losoya near the Convention Center, Riverwalk and hotels.

TODA will also have a booth in the TMEA Registration area. Come by and visit with us.  We look forward to seeing you at TMEA!

Composition Contest

Every year TODA sponsors a Composition Contest to encourage new quality music continues to be available to school orchestra programs.  We are seeking FULL ORCHESTRA compositions this year.  Deadline for submission is April 1, 2016.  Please click here for complete information.

Money Matters  by Lamar Smith, VP Treasurer

In December, I had the opportunity to attend a national music conference I had never been a part of before, and it was a wonderful experience for me as an educator to witness what is happening in the world of instrumental education outside of Texas. It's easy for us to get accustomed to one way of doing things, and my horizons were definitely broadened at this event. However, based on the amount of money  I paid for convention registration, travel, and accommodations, the pay-off I received from the convention's offerings was far less than what I get from my home conventions of TODA and TMEA.

Y'all, TODA is an incredible value! Our offerings in pedagogy, reading sessions, a HUGE exhibit hall, and social events are truly second to none. And, even as the cost of living increases, we are able to offer TODA members an incredible experience at the July convention for a fraction of the cost of other similar conferences. Maybe its time to start setting aside a little money each month so you can enjoy a wonderful four days in San Antonio learning and networking with orchestra directors from all over the state and the nation. (Be sure to set a little aside for your Barbara Eads Scholarship Donation, too!)

The TODA board looks forward to seeing you at TMEA. We will be hanging out at the booth a lot, so be sure to pay us a visit!
